As a Data Engineer, you will work on multi-petabyte scale data lakes, building highly reliable and scalable data platforms. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy transforming ambiguous requirements into robust, production-ready solutions.
You will collaborate closely with product, analytics, and business teams while designing data systems that power decision-making across the organization.
As a Data Engineer at Atlassian, your core responsibilities include:
Collaborating with Product Managers, Engineers, Analytics, and Business teams to gather and refine data and reporting requirements
Designing and building trusted, scalable data models and analytics-ready datasets
Developing ETL data pipelines to ingest data from multiple sources into a centralized data warehouse
Improving data quality using automated tools and internal frameworks to detect anomalies and issues
Establishing and maintaining data governance, ensuring security, privacy, and compliance
Introducing new technologies to improve data processing, reliability, and analytical capabilities
Mentoring and coaching junior data engineers, helping them grow technically and professionally
To succeed in this role, you should bring:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer or Data Engineer
Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or Scala
Solid experience with SQL, data structuring, and storage best practices
Strong understanding of data modeling and data warehousing concepts
Hands-on experience building data pipelines and platforms
Expertise in Databricks, Spark, Hive, Airflow, and streaming technologies
Experience handling large-scale streaming data
Familiarity with modern software practices like Agile, TDD, and CI/CD
A strong focus on data quality, monitoring, and anomaly detection
A growth mindset — willing to fail, learn, and experiment with unconventional solutions
Hands-on experience with AWS services, including:
EMR
Kinesis
RDS
S3
SQS
While not mandatory, Atlassian values candidates who have:
Experience building self-service data platforms and tools
Designed or worked with Kappa architecture systems
Contributed to open-source projects (e.g., Airflow operators)
Hands-on experience with Data Build Tool (DBT)
