We’re looking for a Principal Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Engineering organization—someone deeply passionate about improving how engineering teams build, scale, and deliver high-quality software. In this role, you’ll influence product strategy, guide technical direction at scale, and mentor engineers across the organization.
As a Principal Engineer at Atlassian, you’ll operate at a strategic and technical level, driving impact across teams and systems:
Develop a deep understanding of the user journey and user funnels to deliver meaningful product improvements
Partner closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to influence product vision and technical strategy
Lead the technical direction and implementation of large-scale product features
Evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, and customer impact to ensure the right solutions are built
Identify, debug, and eliminate technical and process inefficiencies across teams
Ship well-tested, secure, reliable, and maintainable code with customer trust as a top priority
Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and complex bug fixes with a strong focus on security, performance, and reliability
Mentor engineers and help level up technical skills across the team
Strengthen the growth engineering organization through hands-on mentoring and technical leadership
Identify blockers and champion engineering excellence, including design principles, testing strategies, performance engineering, and best practices for security and privacy
We’re seeking a senior technical leader with deep experience building and scaling enterprise systems:
10+ years of experience designing and building enterprise-grade software using microservices
Strong background in Java and Kotlin, with hands-on experience in observability tools and service operations
Deep understanding of AWS cloud services and cloud-native architectures
Proven experience building distributed systems for SaaS products
Ability to recognize, raise, and reconcile gaps or redundant efforts across teams and organizations
Strong track record of cross-company collaboration and technical influence
Experience mentoring, coaching, and performance-guiding engineers at senior levels
At Atlassian, compensation is designed to be equitable, explainable, and competitive. Our baseline pay ranges are intentionally set higher than typical market ranges, and most hires are made near this baseline. Final compensation is based on skills, experience, and expertise.
For candidates based in the United States, we use three geographic pay zones:
Zone A: USD 206,100 – USD 269,075
Zone B: USD 186,300 – USD 243,225
Zone C: USD 171,900 – USD 224,425
This role may also be eligible for bonuses, equity, and additional benefits.
